There are 12,000 known species of ants found around the world and many of these can be found living within the UK, some of which includes the common Garden Black Ant, Winged Ant, Red Ant and the Wood Ant to name a few. Ants are sociable insects which possess the skill to stay clean and tidy.
The Ant family consist of the Queen Ant, Female Worker Ants and the Males. The Queen Ant will appear around the summer period and at this point possess wings, the Male Ant also appears to possess wings and their only job is to mate with the Queen. Once the Queen has found her perfect spot to create her colony she will then shed those wings and lay her eggs, those eggs will usually appear in a mass formation which will then form into a larvae and this larvae has the slight appearance of a maggot, these maggots will then start to grow and shed their skin, usually around three times in one day. In order to grow the young ants require regular food, however it is not the Queen which will carry out the search for food it is in fact the worker ants who will undertake this task and these ants will make an appearance after the queen has settled. The worker ants will help to form the nest and go in search of food to bring back for the queen and the young, the worker ants will also provide protection to the colony, ant colonies have their own unique smell and this will deter any foreign ants.
Ants are very small insects which are able to move about easily and get through the smallest of spaces they especially like homes, mainly the kitchen, as this is a great area of providing food sources especially the sweet foods which ants are drawn to. Ant nests are usually created outside of building, usually the garden area, however they can sometimes take up residence within buildings. Once an ant has found food they will then lay a trail for the other ants to easily find.
Ants are very strong insects and they can carry a great deal of weight on their backs, the ants body is usually made roughly the same no matter what the species and contains the antennae which is the ants main sense organ, six legs with three joints, two eyes which are strangely made up of lots of smaller eyes. Ants can lift around 20 times their own body weight and come in a variation of colours, however the ones which you will normally identify will be black, brown, red and even yellow. The interesting part of the ants body is the stomach as surprisingly their abdomen actually contains two stomachs, one will contain the foods which they require in order to stay alive and the other contains foods which is stored up to take back to the colony.
Nests in soil can be far more extensive than the area around the surface and an effective treatment is professional spraying although where possible it is best to leave nest sites alone if they are not a hazard. Within the house nests can prove far more of a problem and there are several treatments available from Millennium pest control that can help to eradicate nest sites or provide a barrier to insect entry. Pharoah ants should always be treated professionally with multiple methods employed to track and eradicate all queens within a building. Please phone our freephone contact number 0800 0854460 to arrange a survey and book a treatment.
