At one stage or another all homeowners run the risk of catching Bed Bugs within their home especially as the number of reported cases in the last year has dramatically increased, Bed Bugs have previously been reported to be attracted to unclean areas however this statement is untrue and anyone is at risk of catching them, hygiene is not the main factor. Bed Bugs are usually picked up from another home or hotel which has been infested and carried on either a person or an item of furniture, without your knowledge, and then brought into the home. Cases are also on the increase as many more people are opting to buy second hand furniture which may already be infested.
Once you have found Bed Bugs within your home it is important that you eradicate the problem as quickly as possible as these bugs will spread rapidly. Bed Bugs will deposit between one and five eggs each day and can survive many months without feeding on any blood. Although the Adult Bed Bugs can last without feeding this is not the same for the newly hatched bugs as they will require feeding at least five times a day in order to grow, in which time they will also shed their skin after each feed in order to grow into an adult. A female Bed Bug can produce around 200 eggs in her lifetime.
Bed bugs will normally appear at night time escaping from the crevices they have been hiding in, usually the bed frame or mattress, and will feed on human blood. On most occasions you will know if you have been bitten as there will be signs of redness on your body which will be irritated or swollen and on some occasions people have had a serious reaction to the bites and on small occasions the odd few people may be lucky and not get any signs on their body. Another way of telling if these nasty bugs have invaded your home would be to look directly on the sheet or mattress as the bugs may leave brown or dark red stains on the sheets which is usually dried blood.
Bed Bugs can be identified as being fairly small creatures which have a flattened look in an oval shape, they will start off as a clear pale colour until they start to feed, once they have started to intake blood they will then start to change their colour into a darker shade more like a reddish brown colour. An adult Bed Bug is around 5-7mm in length and the Nymph (or baby bugs) will start off around 1.5mm long.
In Bed Bug treatments we require greater amounts of access due to the habits of the insect, which might include movement of headboards, skirting boards, fixed cupboards units, bed linen, etc. A four hour exclusion time is required once the treatment is completed.
