BEES

Bees are insects well known for their pollinating skills and providing us with honey however there can be a darker side to bees and at times they can be considered as a pest. Like wasps bees are also more popular in the summer months as the queen will leave the nest around May or June, this will then cause the swarming of other bees, whilst at the same time leaving others grow and to keep the colony going, 21 days is the average time for a young bee to develop.

Bees are usually contained together in a colony located within a hive, the hive is made up of a large number of worker (or female) bees, several drone (or male) bees and one queen bee. It is the worker bees which keep the hive going and provides food for the young.

The main threat from bees will come if they are able to make a hive within your home or building as they can fixate themselves into your walls, lofts and chimneys and cause a number of problems.

IDENTIFICATION

Bees are known for their combination of yellow and black colours on their body and are a distinctive round shape. They are around half an inch in length and have a stinger located on the end of its abdomen (which only the worker bees have). All bees are also covered in body hair.

FACTS
