FLEAS

There are 2,400 species of fleas found worldwide however the main, and most important, species found in this country is the Cat Flea. The Cat Flea in mainly found living on animals especially cats, dogs and sometimes they even move onto humans. Fleas can easily be brought into the home, they are good jumpers as they can jump around 150 times their own body length they easily move from one animal to another and so can be caught outside of the home.

In order to stay alive fleas will feed off of the blood of their host and if they are unable to find an animal within the home they will then target humans, a flea bite on humans can cause small red itching wounds usually found around the ankle of foot area and in some cases can cause an allergic reaction. Fleas will also carry upon them a number of diseases which they will easily pass on through the blood.

Adult female fleas can lay an average of up to 50 eggs per day which can add up to around 500-600 over several months. These eggs are usually laid on the host and will thrive on warm and moist conditions, unfortunately fleas are the type of insect which can rapidly reproduce which means overnight your problem could double in size.

IDENTIFICATION

An adult flea is flattened in appearance and usually a reddish brown or black colour they have two antennas and three pairs of legs in which they use their hind for jumping. These insects are wingless creatures and are therefore unable to fly. The adults range in size from 1-3mm in length and the most important part of the flea is the mouth area as it is equipped with sharp spikes in order to penetrate the skin to draw blood.

FACTS

  • A Female Adult Flea is able to consume 15 times its body weight in blood.
  • Adult Fleas will usually feed on blood however their larvae (eggs) are known to feed off skin feathers and hair.

Top 10 London Pests

We have compiled a list of the top ten pests within the London region over the last year.

Bed Bugs

Humans and warm blooded animals are the chosen food source for bed bugs and this has become the number 1 pest in London. These insects feed mostly at night when you are asleep causing small, hard bites on the skin. The bite can easily become inflamed and itchy and sometimes causes a blotchy reaction. Bed bugs will then hide away till they are ready for their next meal. They can be very difficult to erradicate - we very often undertake two treatments to make sure they don't return...
